The advance publicity received on this new Marine Corps National Museum at Quantico proved to be accurate.
Three chartered buses with 147 Council members aboard thoroughly enjoyed their tour. The 18-minute movie was a great introduction to “joining the Marine Corps” and moving on to boot camp!
The yellow footprints helped our new recruits stand at attention while the drill instructor “whispered” commands in their ears! Yeah, right!
The displays are both well done and varied, including the mock landing on Iwo Jima. Members assembled in the “situation” or briefing room prior to boarding landing crafts that carried them to the beach at Iwo.
Lunch at Tun Tavern or at the larger cafeteria was a welcome break and a time to swap sea stories before resuming the afternoon tour.
The new museum takes you to the various marine engagements starting in the Pacific theater WWII, Korea and Vietnam.
All in all, it was an extremely interesting day with many members expressing the wish to return. It is nearly impossible to visit all of the Marine displays in a few hours.
Hats off to Council’s Chairman of this event, Steve Zembroski! Let’s do it again soon!
