Cadets Graduate From Boot Camp

by Warrant Officer Jennifer Weggen (10/13/2006)

Six cadets from America Division successfully completed a 14-day recruit indoctrination or “boot camp” at Virginia National Guard Base Camp Pendleton, Virginia Beach, this summer. They were: Kevin Powers, Justin Snell, Robert Corbitt, Zakary Metzner, Justin Miller and Joseph Weggen.

During the 14 days, the recruits experienced the Sea Cadet version of the Navy’s boot camp, which included instruction in seamanship, first aid, fire fighting, watch-standing and naval history, along with plenty of physical training. The cadets were well-prepared and several of them earned leadership roles within their recruit companies. Having successfully completed boot camp, the cadets are now eligible for promotion and advanced training opportunities with the active duty Navy and Coast Guard in the future, such as on board surface ships or submarines, aviation, medical, diving, law enforcement, culinary arts, photo-journalism, sailing and special operations.

Navy League Cadet Russel Jarvis completed a one-week recruit orientation in Norfolk in August. At the NLCC training, the League Cadets are introduced to the Navy as well; receiving similar instruction as the Sea Cadets, but the training is geared toward a younger group, ages 11-13.

The cadets’ Commanding Officer, LT(jg) Jeffery Anderson, USNSCC, said that while the unit is growing, there are still openings in both TS Virginia and America Division. Interested young men and women between the ages of 11 and 17 who desire more information may contact LT(jg) Anderson by e-mailing americadivision@aol.com or check out the following websites: www.seacadets.org or www.americadivision.com.

America Division is a member of a national organization comprised of nearly 200 units. Their mission is to encourage the growth and development of American youth by instilling in them patriotism, leadership, discipline, honor, pride, and courage. Cadets develop these qualities through an enlisted-oriented training program with emphasis on leadership skills, accountability, and teamwork. They strive to enable Cadets to experience a military environment while furthering their knowledge in their areas of interest.

The NSCC offers American young men and women, ages 13 through 17, opportunities unparalleled by any other youth organization. USNSCC America Division meets at the Naval-Marine Corps Reserve Center in Richmond, Virginia one weekend a month during the school year. Physical training, classroom instruction, firearms and swim qualifications are just some of the Division's regular activities. Recent trips have included the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Patuxent River Air Station and Andrews Air Force Base.
